Recently, I've been talking to clients about their food memories….you know….when we sat around in the kitchen helping and watching our mother or grandmother, aunt, father, sister, whomever, cook a meal for a family gathering, loving the steamy aromas and the sounds of busy hands and tools.
I loved cooking with my family and for my family. Somehow, it brought us together and we talked and laughed and enjoyed each other in this shared task. My Grandma was a grumpy, cursing, crusty old dame but had a fun time in her kitchen (as long as everyone acknowledged her complete and total control). She was only 5 feet tall and I think I saw her standing on a chair about as much as I saw her out in her garden.
She sure could cook. Loving that kitchen is why I do what I do today.
So, I urge you to spend more time in yours. Bring in the kids, the mate, the partner, some friends: have a cooking club once a month or prepare something you've never eaten before. Just plan to spend some time in the friendliest room in the house with people you enjoy and you'll find a new appreciation for food and cooking.
Here's a great idea I tried with my family and it was a big hit from the oldest to the youngest. I prepared some pizza dough (which you can get store bought or by making it yourself). Then, we challenged each other to make small personal pizzas…..working with pizza dough is an art that requires practice, but if you're willing to have a little abstract in your pizza designs, it's a lot of fun to try.
The toppnigs available then were things like spinach, mushroom, pineapple, peppers, all the meats, white and red sauce, cheeses, and etc…..half the fun is seeing how many different ingredients everyone brings and how there are no two pizzas alike in a party like this. Like snowflakes or fingerprints…everyone has a unique pizza imprint.
The point is…have fun! You don't have to be a chef or a gourmand to enjoy the kitchen and create some great food memories of your own. listen to an interview at http://www.kdrplive.org (the Mindful Connections tab on the left, the show Daily Living Part 2) for more thoughts on great living with food.
